Mark Lawrenson predicts Manchester United’s result vs Tottenham Hotspur

BBC football expert Mark Lawrenson has stated his prediction for Saturday’s Premier League clash between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Red Devils have been in a poor run of form in the league, and they have picked up just one point from the previous four matches.

They recently suffered an embarrassing 5-0 loss to Liverpool at Old Trafford. There should be a strong response against Spurs.

Ahead of the game, Lawrenson has tipped the Red Devils to return to winning ways (2-1) despite their woeful run of league results.

He told BBC Sport: “(Ole Gunnar) Solskjaer has got to make United difficult to beat. Forget any flamboyant football, for now. They just need to start being more solid.”

“With the players United have got, they are a counter-attacking team. They need to start playing like one, and soak up the pressure and play on the break.

“This is a tricky game to approach if you are a manager under pressure like Solskjaer is, but Tottenham are still quite scatty themselves so it would not surprise me if United went there and won.”

Our view:

After last weekend’s humiliation at the hands of Liverpool, it was anticipated that Solskjaer may have managed his final game as the Red Devils’ head coach.

However, that has not been the case. The club’s hierarchy have kept their faith in the Norwegian, but their patience may not last for long if the current run continues.

United have lost three of the last four league matches, and they are already eight points adrift of Chelsea who are flying high at the top of the standings.

The club were fancied to compete for the league title after a sublime summer transfer window that saw the acquisitions of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Varane has been a big miss recently with a groin problem, and it is unclear whether the Frenchman will be available tomorrow. Meanwhile, Sancho has yet to adapt to Premier League football.

Ronaldo has been a shining light for United up front with key winners in the Champions League, but the Portuguese has also failed to score in the previous four league outings.

Saturday’s game will be crucial for the Red Devils with their title prospects already fading.

A third successive league defeat could pave the way for Solskjaer’s immediate dismissal.
