Manchester United have been granted permission to secure their first signing of the summer transfer window, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.
The Red Devils have identified Matheus Cunha as their number one target. They have now reached a complete agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the 26-year-old.
United have reportedly met the terms of the player’s £62.5 million release clause, and Wolves have given permission for the club to conclude a deal with the playmaker.
Cunha will undergo his medical shortly before penning a long-term contract.
Earlier today, the Red Devils attempted to negotiate a long-term payment package for five years, but the Black Cats rejected the transfer proposal, according to BBC Sport.
United are now expected to settle the fee over a two-year period. They will pay £20.83m to Wolves in each of the next three summer transfer windows, including this year.
Cunha had a fantastic 2024/25 campaign with Wolves, registering 17 goals and six assists from 36 appearances. He predominantly played from the number 10 position.
The Brazilian should be a fantastic acquisition for United. He could form a dream partnership with Bruno Fernandes in manager Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation next season.
His arrival could raise questions about the future of Alejandro Garnacho. The Argentine star was dropped to the bench for the Europa League final last week and was far from pleased.
Amorim has reportedly told him to find a new club this summer. The Red Devils will receive pure profit from selling their club graduate under the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
United will demand around £60m for the 20-year-old, who was on the radar of Chelsea and Napoli last winter. The duo could make fresh moves to sign him during the summer.
