Williams and Greenwood start, Predicted Manchester United lineup (4-2-3-1) to face Wolves

Manchester United are scheduled to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on the road in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday evening. The Red Devils were thoroughly outclassed by Arsenal in a disappointing 2-0 league defeat on New Year’s Day and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be expecting a strong response from his side.

Still, the challenge won’t be straightforward, considering Wolves have proved a bogey club for United since their return to the Premier League. In the past four meetings, United have failed to register a single victory and that includes the quarter-final of last season’s FA Cup where Wolves won by a 2-1 scoreline.

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Predicted Lineup:

Solskjaer has already confirmed that Sergio Romero will replace David de Gea in goal. The Argentine has made all of his seven appearances in the Cup competitions this term and has kept an impressive five clean sheets.

In the defence, there could be a straight swap in the full-back positions. Ashley Young and Brandon Williams are likely to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw respectively. At the heart of the defence, one of Harry Maguire or Victor Lindelof could be rested. The former has mostly featured under Solskjaer of late and he may command a starting role alongside Phil Jones.

In the centre of the park, Fred could be offered a breather after playing 90 minutes in every league game since the last international break. This should witness a rare start for James Garner and he is likely to be accompanied by Nemanja Matic, particularly with both Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba on the sidelines with injury concerns.

Jesse Lingard is likely to get the axe from the starting lineup after another poor performance in the league. Elsewhere, Marcus Rashford and Daniel James could drop to the bench after constantly featuring for the club over the past few months. In this case, there should be a complete reshuffle of the attack. Andreas Pereira, Juan Mason and Mason Greenwood are likely to start with Anthony Martial leading the line.
