Wigan Athletic 0-2 Manchester United: Player ratings as Dalot and Fernandes keep United’s silverware dream alive

Manchester United defeated Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup third round at the DW Stadium this evening.

The Red Devils created a flurry of chances in the first half, but poor finishing let them down.

Diogo Dalot’s magnificent strike put Man United ahead. Bruno Fernandes put the result beyond doubt after scoring the second goal from the penalty spot.

Wigan never troubled the visitors and allowed them to dominate possession.

United will next travel to either Eastleigh or Newport County in the FA Cup fourth round.

Let’s get into some player ratings.

Player Ratings

Andre Onana – 6/10

The Cameroon international made a few decent grabs but wasn’t tested often enough.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6/10

The right-back could have been more courageous going forward.

Raphael Varane – 7/10

The Frenchman saw plenty of the ball and misplaced only seven passes out of 101 attempted.

Jonny Evans – 7/10

The veteran had a comfortable game at the back. He won all his ground duels (5) and made four tackles.

Diogo Dalot – 8/10

The Portuguese full-back found the back of the net with an exquisite curling finish.

He took attacking positions and joined Mainoo in the midfield often.

Kobbie Mainoo – 8/10

Mainoo was the best player on the pitch. He made eight tackles and nullified a couple of Wigan’s counter-attacks.

Scott McTominay – 5/10

The Scotland international produced another harmless display. He missed a few decent chances that could have come to bite United later.

Bruno Fernandes – 7/10

United’s skipper earned a very soft penalty and slotted it past the goalkeeper.

Alejandro Garnacho – 7/10

Garnacho was a constant threat from the right flank. He rattled the crossbar with a sublime strike in the first half.

Marcus Rashford – 6/10

The England international looked lively and provided the impetus from his favoured left-wing spot. His influence faded in the second half.

Rasmus Hojlund – 5/10

Hojlund could have bagged a first-half hat-trick but was guilty of missing straightforward goalscoring opportunities.
