Heaton’s Career at Manchester United
Some Manchester United fans don’t know that the club signed Heaton in 2002 from Wrexham Youth when he was 16. He went on to play for the club’s Under-17 team and the reserves, where he won the FA Youth Cup, Premier Reserves League, and Central League.
United also included Heaton on the bench in seasons 2006/07 and 2007/08, but he didn’t get a chance to make his senior debut. Before and after his inclusion in the first team, Heaton went on multiple loans in the UK and abroad.
Among the clubs that he represented were Swindon Town, Royal Antwerp, Cardiff City, QPR, Rochdale, and Wycombe Wanderers. After 8 years under contract with Manchester United, Heaton left the club on a free to join Cardiff in the Championship.
We also saw him play for Bristol City in 2012, before spending 6 seasons with Burnley. Heaton made the most appearances playing for the latter club, accumulating a total of 200 appearances. He also helped Burnley win the 2015/16 Championship.
His good performances at the club attracted the attention of Aston Villa, which signed him for £8 million in 2019. He was rather active during the first season as he appeared in 20 matches.
But he didn’t make a single appearance during his second season at the club and left for free by the end. Luckily for him, United approached him in 2021 to return to Manchester as their new 3rd goalkeeper. You might remember his debut in a Champions League match against Young Boys in December 2021.
Heaton also started in two EFL Cup matches the next season against Charlton Athletic and Nottingham Forest. Sadly, these were his only appearances for United, and he’s yet to make his Premier League debut for the club. But we’re sure that he’s proud of his performances as he kept 3 clean sheets.
