As Andreas Pereira and Jesse Lingard are listed as ‘fringe’ players by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, United look to strengthen their midfield.
Donny Van de Beek’s official arrival announcement is imminent and the deal could wrap up in a couple of days.
United were linked with James Maddison and Jack Grealish earlier. Maddison signed a new contract with Leicester and Grealish’s £70m asking price is too much.
United are interested in Champions League winner Thiago Alcantra.
Liverpool are linked with Thiago too. However, they refused to pay the €30m asking price.
Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge publicly said that they are expecting a €30m bid from Liverpool for Thiago. If they don’t react proactively, Thiago could join other clubs too. The 29-year-old wants to move to Premier League.
Christian Falk reports that Liverpool have an edge over United as Thiago wants to join the Merseyside club too. United have submitted no official bid for the Spaniard yet.
It is reported that Thiago’s wage demands are too high for the Red Devils. As per FIFAIndex, Thiago’s current wage is around €165,000.
However, there are two possible reasons why United are hesitant to sign Thiago.
Firstly, Thiago is 29 and he doesn’t match United’s youth-oriented transfer policy. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is thinking long term and will be cautious in proceeding with players on the other side of 30 or above.
Secondly, Thiago could be signed as a free agent in the next four months as his contract with Bayern expires in 2021.
United have already signed Van de Beek and the money they splash out for Thiago could be better used to sign their current targets Jadon Sancho and Dayot Upamecano.
As per Sky Sports, United lose around £5m per game as the Reds play behind closed doors following the COVID-19 pandemic.
