Who will Ten Hag replace Maguire with?

Manchester United are set for a big squad rebuild this summer and one of the prime areas of focus could be the defensive department.

The Red Devils have conceded a staggering 51 goals from their 34 league games this term, six more than Burnley, who are placed 17th.

Raphael Varane was brought to bolster the heart of the defence last summer, but the Frenchman has been sidelined with regular injuries.

Amidst this, Harry Maguire has also struggled to find consistency. He has been prone to unforced and positional errors this campaign.

The Red Devils’ recent failed pursuit of Antonio Rudiger suggests that they could be eyeing a potential replacement for the England star.

Here are few transfer candidates that could replace Maguire in the XI.

Pau Torres – Villarreal

The Spain international has been a long-term target for the Red Devils, and he was regularly linked last summer before the hierarchy turned their attention towards Varane’s services.

It appears United are back in the hunt for the left-footed centre-back, who has a strong aerial prowess. Torres has a £50.5 million buy-out clause on his contract. Villarreal prefer a straight-cash offer.

Jules Kounde – Sevilla

Similar to Torres, the young Frenchman was regularly tipped for a Premier League move last summer. United were first in the mix before Chelsea emerged as potential favourites.

The Blues failed to negotiate a deal before the deadline. United are now said to be ‘eyeing‘ a move for the Frenchman. He won’t come on the cheap with a release clause worth £68m.

Jurrien Timber – Ajax

Erik ten Hag may look to pursue a couple of players from his former club. Timber could be under consideration, having excelled under his tutelage at Ajax this campaign.

The 20-year-old has averaged an impressive two tackles and 1.4 interceptions. He has also excelled with his distribution, having completed 92 per cent of his passes. He is valued at £27m by Transfermarkt.

Manuel Akanji – Borussia Dortmund

Akanji is expected to leave the Bundesliga giants, having snubbed a new deal beyond June 2023. United have been regularly linked with him, and are reportedly willing to meet his wage demands.

The Swiss is a strong ball-playing defender similar to Timber, but is vastly experienced for club and country. He could be prised away for a knockdown price of around £21m this summer.
