As our Premier League campaign goes steadily from bad to worse, we mull over the Manchester United players who could be a part of Roy Hodgson’s plans for the World Cup Finals in Brazil this summer, England are in the so called group of death and the media and fans alike don’t have much hope for England in this group (d) just check out the odds in the link to see why! At the outset of this Premier League season, we could quite understandably have expected a healthy number of the English footballers in our squad to be on that all important plane to Brazil this summer. As it stands, with our side out of sorts on the pitch and seventh in the Premier League, a few of those players will find their places in jeopardy. Nevertheless, a good proportion of the England dressing room will be filled with United players. Here’s our brief guide to the Reds who we might be seeing in a White shirt this summer.
Wayne Rooney – Rooney’s place in the squad for this year’s World Cup is well and truly nailed on and gold-plated. When this man is on form, England perform, and if recent showings in a Man United shirt are anything to go by, the Three Lions will be lucky to have him this summer.
In spite of his clear and prodigious talents, Rooney has never met his full potential in an international tournament. Could this summer bring about his real breakthrough? If so, greatness beckons.
Phil Jones – In an England squad that could well be looking ever so slightly delicate with the likes of Raheem Sterling now in the frame, our hard-as-nails defender Phil Jones could bring some much needed brawn into the equation. Jones has been in and out of the England squad in recent years, but his ability to play in a number of positions will surely bolster his chances of selection.
Chris Smalling – Smalling has done well to work his way into the England squad recently, having made six appearances in an England shirt in 2013. He’ll be hoping his persistence will earn him a place in Hodgson’s first team.
Michael Carrick – at 32 years old(!), Carrick finds himself as one of the wise old heads amongst England’s very best footballers. With 31 caps to his name, his wealth of experience at the highest level will surely be enough to offset recent club form and see him safely to Brazil this summer. After making significant contributions to England’s Qualifying campaign for the tournament, you’d have to say he’s earned it.
