Lisandro Martinez is ready to help his teammates succeed and win titles at Manchester United.
The Argentina international moved to Old Trafford after a £56 million transfer from Ajax.
Martinez has become one of the first names on the team sheet after putting in some inspiring performances this season.
He has been United’s best defender under Erik ten Hag. Speaking to Sky Sports, Martinez said he is happy to play in other positions if it helps the team.
He said: “Now I am playing as a centre-back, I am feeling very well in that position.
“But if you have to play in midfield, if you have to play as a full-back, I will do it for the team. It is no problem. When the team needs you, you have to be there.”
Martinez flourished under Ten Hag when the duo previously worked together at Ajax.
He believes that the Dutchman’s ideas are already having an effect on the team.
“It is a good mentality,” he added. “You can see it in the game [against Tottenham]. We were very aggressive.
“Very good tactically, with and without the ball, the movement, the connection of the team. It takes time, for sure. We have to be patient. But we are in a good way.
“Our ambition is to win titles, to put Manchester United where they deserve [to be].
“I think we are in a good way to do it. But we have to keep our feet on the ground – we have to be humble and take it step by step.”
Martinez brings intensity at the back
Man United have signed several defenders in the last few years, but none of them provided the aggression which the team required.
Martinez offers a dynamic style of defending. He is constantly charging the striker, ready to intercept and tackle.
He does not shy away from a fight and brings the much-needed pace at the back which Harry Maguire was unable to offer.
Being a left-footer, he provides a different angle of ball distribution which helps United to maintain ball possession.
He boasts a pass completion of 88.7% ,which is something Ten Hag wants from his defenders.
Pundits were quick to criticise him after drubbing received from Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford.
However, whenever he has played alongside Raphael Varane, United’s defence has looked much more assured.
In eight of the games they have started together, the Red Devils have maintained five clean sheets.
Martinez will hopefully stay fit and continue his form. His presence will play a key role in what United will achieve this season.
