With transfer talks between Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund officially at loggerheads, Jadon Sancho is at the point in his footballing career where he would have to choose his footballing future in the upcoming days. Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc also dropped a bombshell by claiming Sancho, 20, is contracted to Dortmund until 2023, rather than 2022.
This piece of information is being used by the Dortmund negotiating team to drive up the price of the English superstar. The German club is officially holding out for a fee of €120 million and not a penny less.
This fee is not acceptable to the Red Devils who are already facing losses in regards to the stopping of play due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
As the date of 10th August comes to a close, which has been publically stipulated by the German giants as the last day of negotiations in this transfer saga, many are left to wonder what is going to happen next?
As Jadon Sancho has reportedly already agreed to the details of his contract with the Red Devils and the Dortmund machine already facing losses up to a €45 million (US$50.5 million) as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, this is not a matter of not selling but the struggle of selling him for the right price.
With Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solksjaer anxious to add him to the squad and Jadon Sancho himself wanting a return to his homeland England, The question which arises is Why not a Transfer Request?
The reasons for this question is not as simple as it looks and the reasons are stated as follows-
#1 No guarantee
Serving the club a transfer request does not guarantee Sancho an assured transfer to United, but just serves as a notice to Dortmund that he just doesn’t want to play for them anymore. He is still under the contract and will remain a Dortmund until it expires.
#2 Frozen out
If the transfer still does not take place after the notice, Sancho could be frozen out of the first team in case of any bad blood developed due to this saga. This has happened before in the case of some very talented players like Zakaria Bakkali and can happen again if the situation cannot be resolved.
#3 Loss of bonuses
What the club can do when a transfer request is made is to refuse certain payments promised to the player in the form of bonuses. This entirely depends on the terms of the original contract, but clubs will be allowed to withhold payments such as loyalty bonuses.
Most contracts work in such a way that loyalty bonuses are paid in one lump sum and not as part of the weekly wages. That is what the players risk losing when they ask to leave.
These reasons may play as a factor in the player’s mind with regards to requesting a transfer. However, transfer mogul Fabrizio Romano suggests that United and Sancho have agreed upon personal terms and the English international should do ‘something’ to add gasoline to the fire generated by United.
With the transfer market open till the 5th of October, this transfer saga is far from over. But to keep a player who wants to leave speaks volumes about the club’s mismanagement if they don’t sell. The Dortmund board will not welcome this decision if Sancho stays at Dortmund.
