Manchester United have struggled to score goals from open play at Old Trafford this season. United have only scored one goal from open play in the league at home this term – which came against Crystal Palace in a 1-3 loss.
The 0-0 draw against Manchester City was their third scoreless game at Old Trafford in the Premier League. The Red Devils are heavily dependent on Bruno Fernandes who is involved in the majority of the chances United have created.
This calls for a deeper problem where the squad lacks quality from other players. United’s no.9 Anthony Martial has contributed to zero goals this season in seven appearances. Mason Greenwood, who was a revelation last term, is struggling to find his feet too.
United were knocked out of the Champions League last week and things don’t look rosy for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Despite this, we see the Baby-Faced Assassin defending his team in front of the press.
“If you compare our goal tally from last season to now we are ahead way with the amount of games that we have played and the amount of goals we have scored whether that is home or away it doesn’t really matter,” Solskjaer explained.
“I think teams, and bigger teams set the stall out to defend against us and be happy with a draw. That is of course a challenge for us but I think we have proven in many games that we do create chances.
“I think we have scored and created a lot of chances at certain moments and it’s more varied in the way we score.”
Yes, United create a lot of chances but they’ve looked shabby at home. Old Trafford has a rich football heritage and the Red Devils are easily getting outplayed at home. They’ve not dominated any game from the first minute this season.
United need to change their approach. They cannot depend on counter-attacks and moments of individual brilliance alone.
