As we enter March we take another step closer to ‘squeaky bum time’. This February threw up tricky looking fixtures in the Premier League with trips to Stamford Bridge to face a ‘transitional’ Chelsea, and to Carrow Road to take on the relatively high-flying Norwich City. Sandwiched between those league games United welcomed hosted Liverpool in a more highly anticipated than usual clash thanks to the return of racist centre forward Luis Suarez who unforgivably failed to shake the hand of United captain, Patrice Evra. Consecutive Thursday nights were taken up tackling Ajax in a somewhat haphazard manner in the highly coveted Europa League.
Despite performances and form being erratic to say the least, United came out of February relatively unscathed winning the battles against Liverpool and Norwich and rescuing a point at Stamford Bridge despite being three goals behind shortly after the interval.
In the Europa League United returned on a high from Amsterdam with a seemingly decent pot of goals after playing Ajax off the grass in the Amsterdam Arena and showing Eriksen and his fellow cohorts the red light keeping the back doors shut and their clean sheet in tact. In fact, some might say Ajax were rolled over and left with their Bob Hope up in smoke but luckily for United they were well protected after scoring twice out there. A dopey disjointed display amid Dutch fans bonging their drums at Old Trafford, thankfully wasn’t enough to see us eliminated from the competition, but to be blunt, if they basque in former glories in the next round, they might not be so lucky.
