Manchester United progressed to the fourth round of this season’s FA Cup with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Reading at Old Trafford this afternoon.
Juan Mata scored from the penalty spot midway through the first half before Romelu Lukaku sealed the tie in first-half stoppage time.
VAR awarded the penalty after Mata was fouled inside the penalty area. Lukaku made it three goals in three games in his first start under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when the striker latched onto a superb through ball from Alexis Sanchez, taking it past Reading goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola with his first touch before rolling the ball into the empty net.
Sergio Romero was called into action on more occasions than he was problem expecting today in what was a scrappy performance from us. Matteo Darmian had shifted into a centre-back role alongside Phil Jones as Victor Lindelof was given a rest this afternoon.
One sour note was that Alexis Sanchez limped off just after the hour and straight after Ole had just made a double substitution. That previous substitution included 19-year-old Tahith Chong making his Manchester United debut down the right wing.
