Ajax striker Brian Brobbey has opened the door for a transfer to Manchester United this summer.
The Dutchman was heavily linked with a reunion with United manager Erik ten Hag in 2022, but he opted to rejoin Ajax on a permanent basis from RB Leipzig.
Brobbey has since developed into a key player for the Eredivisie giants. Ajax had a poor 2023/24 season, but Brobbey stood out with 22 goals and 12 assists from 43 outings.
Speaking recently to NOS Jeugdjournaal, Brobbey was asked about his dream club. In response, he mentioned United alongside Arsenal, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
He said: “Arsenal, I think that is a very nice club. If you look at that stadium. A very nice club, but that also applies to Manchester United, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.”
Brobbey would be a good signing for the right price
Brobbey had two separate spells at Ajax under Ten Hag. He was on loan from Leipzig during the back end of the 2021/22 season where he scored seven goals in 11 league games.
Ten Hag made a personal phone call to bring him to Old Trafford, but Brobbey chose to rejoin the former Dutch champions, having verbally agreed over a summer transfer.
Brobbey has since flirted with the idea of joining United. If Ten Hag remains at the helm this summer, we won’t be surprised if United consider an approach for his services.
Rasmus Hojlund has had a decent debut season after his big-money move from Atalanta. The Dane is the club’s top scorer with 16 goals, one more than Bruno Fernandes.
Despite his efforts, United have fallen well short of their top-four aim. It is quite clear that United need another quality young striker to compete for places with Hojlund.
Brobbey would be a good signing due to his physical presence and surprising aerial ability for his height.
United have previously been dragged into spending big by Ajax. The club were made to pay over the odds with the huge £86 million outlay to sign Antony in 2022.
Ajax also took advantage of a bidding battle to secure a higher fee for Lisandro Martinez.
Brobbey is currently valued at £21m by Transfermarkt, but Ajax could hold out for double the price.
In our view, Brobbey would be a good acquisition, provided United are not held to ransom by Ajax.
