Van Gaal’s number one target

165826220Louis Van Gaal has made Bastian Schweinsteiger his number one target for this summer and is determined to lure the Bayern Munich midfielder to Old Trafford this season, as he aims to begin a major overhaul of the current squad ahead of next season.

Having missed out on Toni Kroos and Thomas Mueller and with Cesc Fabregas joining Chelsea, United know they can’t afford to let another summer pass by without bolstering their engine room and the 29-year-old seems to be Van Gaal’s choice, undoubtedly aided by the relationship the pair developed when the Dutchman was in charge of Bayern Munich.

During his time at the Allianz Arena, Van Gaal converted Schweinsteiger from winger to central midfielder and the German international hasn’t looked back since, developing into one of the best in the world in his role and reinforcing his status as pivotal figure for the Bavarian club, with which he won the Treble in the 2012-13 campaign before winning a domestic double last season.

United have long been admirer of Schweinsteiger and when rumours linking the Bayern midfielder with a move to Old Trafford first surfaced earlier this week they were quickly dismissed as nothing more than speculation. Today, however, both the Independent and the Times believe United could be set for a bid in the region of €25m – £20m – and the German midfielder could be convinced to leave the all-conquering Bavarians to join Van Gaal’s revolution at Old Trafford.

Despite a few injuries problems last season Schweinsteiger still managed to score eight goals and assisting a further five over 36 appearances and with Tom Cleverley, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini the only options at Van Gaal’s disposal – assuming that Anderson will be shipped out once and for all – the German’s arrival would be fantastic news for United.
