Louis Van Gaal has hinted that Radamel Falcao could return to Monaco in the summer after admitting the Colombian would be a bit-part player at Old Trafford.
Falcao has scored only four Premier League goals in 13 league starts this season and United appear unlikely to invest the £43.4m needed to sign the striker permanently this summer.
“Falcao has been given the chance to be in the team this season,” said Van Gaal.
“You can say he is unlucky – he has the quality to play.
“I like him and the way he played against Chelsea last week.
“He was unlucky he didn’t score.”
The United manager also appeared to slam the door on a possible return to the club for Javier Hernandez, who looks set to move elsewhere once his loan to Real Madrid expires this summer.
“I like Falcao as a human being, just as I like Danny Welbeck and Chicharito, they are always professional,” he said.
“But when you are not in the team for season after season, there comes a time when you need a challenge.
“That’s why I have said goodbye to Welbeck and Chicharito. And now I have to talk with Falcao.”
