Louis Van Gaal has said Manchester United’s “surprise signing” is not a striker, despite what has been reported over the last couple of days.
The United manager had hinted that United will bring in a surprise name to bolster their attacking options before the transfer deadline, but he now seems to have backtracked, indicating that the signing might not be a striker after all.
“I don’t know if I want to buy a striker. I have read in the media that a striker is the surprise,” he said after United’s 3-1 win against the San Jose Earthquakes.
“No, that I have not said. You are saying that, because my answer is like that. No, I mean something else.”
Late on Tuesday, the Daily Mirror suggested that United were keen to sign Juventus striker Fernando Llorente as a replacement for Robin Van Persie and Radamel Falcao.
Amid all the speculations, one thing is certain: the media have not got a clue about Van Gaal’s real intentions.
