Since taking over the club in July, David Moyes has repeatedly stressed the need to rebuild his team and part ways with many players of the current crop, regardless of how successful or how important to the club they might be.
It is, therefore, slightly surprising to see one players widely expected to leave Old Trafford this summer declaring that he’s determined to continue playing football with Manchester United, yet that’s exactly what Rio Ferdinand did yesterday, when he announced his intentions to remain at the club beyond the summer.
Rio has seen his involvement with the first team drastically reduced this season and was expected to retire at the end of the season once his contract expires, joining Patrice Evra and Ryan Giggs on the way out of Old Trafford, a path upon which Nemanja Vidic has officially embarked for some time now.
Ferdinand has played just nine Premier League games this season and many thought the opportunity to dedicate himself full-time to flog gear of dubious quality on social media or pursue a large pay-check in the MLS would prove too tempting for him. The 35-year-old, though, has other ideas.
“I want to continue playing. I’m enjoying my football. The legs aren’t giving way yet,” Rio told BT Sport.
“Whether that’s at Manchester United or somewhere else, dependant on what the club want to do.
“We will wait until the end of the season.”
When asked if he wanted to continue his career at United, Ferdinand’s reply was unequivocal: “Of course, that’s the dream. I’m living the dream and I want that to continue.”
