Manchester United have confirmed Matteo Darmian as their latest signing, after agreeing a deal with Torino for the Italian right-back.
The Italy international was officially unveiled on Saturday night after signing a four-year deal with an option for a further 12 months, while the Serie A outfit will initially receive £12.7m.
While he might be an unexpected signing, Darmian’s arrival is set to address one of the areas in which United have struggled over the last few seasons.
Louis Van Gaal’s decision to deploy Antonio Valencia as makeshift right-back was borne more out of necessity than conviction, given Rafael’s injury problems made the Brazilian unavailable for long spells of the season.
Speaking at Darmian’s unveiling, the United manager praised the new 25-year-old’s versatility.
“Matteo is a right-sided full back with the versatility of also being able to play on the left,” said Van Gaal.
“He is a strong defender and has the ability to go forward in the attacking positions which is a fantastic attribute to have and much needed in the fast rhythm of the Premier League.
“Matteo will be a great addition to the team. I am delighted to welcome Matteo to the club and look forward to working with him in the coming days.”
Darmian, who has 13 caps for Italy, described joining United as a ‘dream coming true’.
“It is a dream come true to be joining Manchester United,” he said.
“I have loved the time that I have spent at Torino and I would like to thank the club and the fans for everything they have done for me.
“I am sure they can understand when the opportunity to join the biggest club in world came along it was something I had to do.
“To work with Louis van Gaal, a manager that has achieved so much in football is such an exciting prospect.”
