Transfer Rumours

United track Barca star

Alexis SánchezAlexis Sanchez is the latest name to appear on Louis Van Gaal’s list after the Dutch manager was thought to be monitoring the Barcelona winger with a view to a potential bid this summer.

With the World Cup barely a day away, the returning loanees Bebe and Anderson are the only new arrivals at United and a situation that looked so promising when the Holland manager was appointed ahead of next season now looks increasingly resembling of the farce that unfolded last season, when United’s transfer window went from bad to Marouane Fellaini.

Van Gaal is said to be an admirer of the Barcelona man and he will get to monitor him from close up when Holland face Chile during the World Cup but while the Chilean would slot in perfectly in Van Gaal’s preferred 4-3-3 formation, United could face strong competition from a host of other clubs.

Juventus have long been linked with offering the Barcelona striker a way back to Serie A, where Sanchez played with Udinese for three seasons before moving to Barcelona in 2011 for just over £21m, and were close to agreeing a deal a couple of weeks ago, even though nothing more concrete came of it.

Despite being only 25, this year’s will be Sanchez’s second World Cup and the Chilean has already got Champions League experience under his belt, despite failing to fully realise his potential during his three-year spell at the Camp Nou, where he’s often found himself behind Lionel Messi, Pedro and, in the last 12 months, Neymar in the pecking order.

According to the Guardian, Barcelona could accept an offer of around £20m for the Chilean but were Sanchez to arrive at Old Trafford then one between Shinji Kagawa, Ashley Young, Nani or Antonio Valencia would have to make way for the Chilean international and while some believe Kagawa could thrive under Van Gaal, not many tears are likely to be shed if Young, Nani or Valencia depart.

The rumour mill rumbles on, but there are no signs of new arrivals as yet.
