United to open talks with Bayern star

hi-res-f55de921efcd5e25254c2880dba45d5b_crop_northManchester United look set to open talks with Bayern Munich over the signing of Bastian Schweinsteiger, as Louis Van Gaal seeks to bolster his midfield options.

The German, who was converted from a left winger into a dominant central midfielder during Van Gaal’s spell in Bavaria, was repeatedly link with a move to Old Trafford a couple of years ago but the transfer never materialised as he chose to remain at the Allianz Arena.

However, with Schweinsteiger’s renewal surrounded by a growing impasse, United have reportedly taken the first step towards bringing the 30-year-old to Old Trafford.

According to Mark Ogden of the Daily Telegraph, van Gaal is “ready to exploit” the lack of renewal with the Bavarian giants.

Ogden claims that “talks have already taken place between intermediaries and (the) United manager.”

The Daily Mail has also picked on the rumours surrounding the 2014 World Cup winner, suggesting that “United have been asked about their interest in Schweinsteiger three times in recent weeks but have refused to comment. ”

At 30 years of age, the German doesn’t fit United’s targeted age range for new players, although Van Gaal is understood to have spoken with Ed Woodward about the need to recruit a player like Schweinsteiger, who could be available for £10m.

Meanwhile, speaking to German football magazine Kicker, the Bayern midfielder admitted that he would not be rushed into signing a new deal.

“I am in no hurry to renew,” he was quoted as saying.

“It is not something that bothers me because I have a year left before it expires. The important thing is that my physical problems and injuries are resolved. The rest will follow.”
