Manchester United look set to miss out on Atletico Madrid defender Miranda, who’s expected to put an end to speculations linking with a move away from the Vicente Calderon and remain with the Spanish champions next season.
The 29-year-old centre-back had emerged as a potential replacement for Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, with some reports that emerged a few weeks ago going as far as suggesting that United had agreed to trigger the Brazilian’s release clause in order to secure the defender’s services.
Over the last couple of days, however, Spanish newspaper Marca claimed that Miranda will return to Atletico Madrid when Diego Simeone’s men are summoned up for pre-season and the Brazilian can expect a similar treatment to that enjoyed by fellow teammates Koke and Gabi, who have been handed a pay-rise and a new deal following their performances last season.
The Brazilian defender was a pivotal figure in Atletico Madrid’s title-winning campaign last season, as the Colchoneros clinched their first league title in 18 years and came within a whisker of beating Real Madrid in the Champions League final, just 12 months after defeating their neighbours in the Spanish Cup final – incidentally thanks to a goal from Miranda.
Barcelona were also reportedly interest in the 29-year-old but have now seemingly focused on Borussia Dortmund’s defender Mats Hummels, who’s been on United’s radar for some time.
