As we all know it has been a tough few years for Manchester United, and things have not really improved under Ruben Amorim given last season’s hugely disappointing 15th place finish in the Premier League, but there is reason for hope as we are on the cusp of kicking off our domestic 2025/26 campaign.
Amorim’s efforts to reshape his first team squad options continue at pace, and having seen further departures in recent weeks (with more hopefully to come), we have spent big on bringing in Wolverhampton Wanderers talent Matheus Cunha and Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and although some outlet’s have us involved in the chase for wantaway Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, the links to RB Leipzig talent Benjamin Sesko just will not go away.
For United fans who watch broadcasts abroad they will undoubtedly access content with a dedicated IP VPN service for their privacy and security and they will be relishing the opportunity to watch our new players in live competitive action just like the rest of us.
As we moved through the weekend the transfer window speculation rumour mill threw a curve ball into the mix and suggested that Leipzig were now tracking Rasmus Hojlund, and that naturally conjured up further speculation that there could be a swap plus cash deal in the offing. Whatever the truth of that may be, there is no denying that the more immediate future of the 22 year old Denmark international is in doubt.
Having arrived at Old Trafford from Italian Serie A side Atalanta back in the summer of 2023 on a deal reportedly worth up to £72 million, with the huge expectations on his shoulders and many billing him as our equivalent of Erling Haaland, he has been very disappointing for many. His adaption to the English game, performance levels and ability to impact a match on a more consistent basis are topics open for debate, but he has scored 26 times in 73 starts and 22 substitute appearances and whilst that is not great by Premier League standards, it is not as poor as some in the wider world of football are making out.
Our gaffer seems in no rush to move him on just now, but neither is he being unequivocal about his future being at Old Trafford. He has however played his part in our pre season build up so far, and for many they would have been impressed with his efforts as he has looked sharp and determined.
But given the more recent history a clean slate could be in the best interests of both parties here, and Slovenian international Sesko is a mouth watering prospect given his own recent form as the 2024/25 campaign was an outstanding one from him on a domestic front. The sticking point would be the finances.
Hojlund’s own form has seen his value crash since we first signed him and for any deal to take place Sir Jim Ratcliffe is simply going to have to swallow that loss, but on that front a partial swap deal would be more palatable as replacing him would be built in and we could more quickly move forward with our own plans.
One thing is for sure, we are very unlikely to bring in another striker, let alone one of Sesko’s calibre, unless Hojlund is set for the door, so it ultimately hinges on whether or not Amorim feels that he can get him back to his best so we start to see a real return on our outlay, or whether he feels that his efforts would be wasted and we should simply draw a line now and move on.
