Louis Van Gaal is looking to bring two members of his Holland squad to Old Trafford after the World Cup, with the United manager seemingly determined to ensure a deal is agreed for Feyenoord pair Jordy Clasie and Bruno Martins Indi.
Clasie and Martins Indi have emerged as some of the brightest talents in Dutch football and, despite being only 22 years of age, both have forced their way in the Holland squad and are widely expected to be in the starting XI for the Oranje’s opening fixture against Spain on June 13.
With United having decided against pursuing Toni Kroos and with Van Gaal seemingly intent to do the same with Cesc Fabregas, Clasie might not be the sort of household name fans have been dreaming about but the Feyenoord midfielder has already attracted interest from different European clubs and is expected to become one of the most sought-after young midfielders in European football.
The pint-sized midfielder, who can play as a playmaker of deeper just in front of the back four, made 37 appearances in all competition with Feyenoord last season, scoring once and delivering eight assists and he’s been likened to Paul Scholes by Robin Van Persie, a player who knows the Feyenoord academy very well having come through its ranks himself.
Clasie’s contract with the Rotterdam giants expires in 2016 and Feyenoord have put a £7m price-tag on him but could be willing to do business after the World Cup, says the Mirror.
Meanwhile, having parted ways with both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, United are in desperate need of at least one centre-back and Van Gaal seems to think Martins Indi could fit the bill.
The 22-year-old has been a pivotal figure for Feyenoord over the last two seasons, so much so that his performances have earned him a regular spot in the Holland squad and Van Gaal could now try to convince Feyenoord to accept an offer for the Portugal-born Holland international.
At just over 6ft Martins Indi cuts an imposing figure, yet his dynamism and pace make him versatile enough to be deployed as left-back as well as in the middle of the back four, a point Van Gaal will surely have in mind considering the deal for Luke Shaw has now stalled, after the Southampton left-back looked to have been on his way to United.
Like his teammate Clasie, Martins Indi is under contract with Feyenoord until 2016 and the Rotterdam club are thought to be demanding around £6m for him.
