Bastian Schweinsteiger could leave Bayern Munich this summer, according to Matthias Sammer, the club’s sporting director.
The 2014 World Cup winner has spent his whole career with the Bavarian giants but has been repeatedly linked with a move to Old Trafford over the last couple of years, with rumours intensifying in the last month or so.
The 30-year-old said he was in no hurry to renew his current deal, which expires at the end of next season, prompting speculations that he would consider a reunion with Louis Van Gaal, under whom he worked between 2009 and 2011.
Schweinsteiger has since stated that he was looking forward to win a fourth consecutive league title with Bayern Munich but Sammer has refused to rule out the possibility of the midfielder leaving the Allianz Arena this summer.
“Basically, nothing is excluded,” Sammer told reporters when asked about Schweinsteiger during a press conference to unveil Bayern’s latest signing, Douglas Costa.
“It’s a crazy world. He has clearly expressed that he is an important part of the team, but let’s see. We’re still waiting.
“Basti is a very important player to Bayern Munich but there are a few things to consider. We have noticed the speculation going around in public but we’ll just have to wait. You can’t rule anything out in the transfer window.
“Basti himself has spoken clearly. He’s a very important part of the team. That’s all I can tell you at the moment.”
