United suffer Rooney blow

Manchester-United-v-Stoke-CityManchester United will be without Wayne Rooney for the next six weeks, starting with tomorrow’s trip to Denmark, after the England captain has been ruled out with a knee ligament injury.

After a dismal start to the season, Rooney’s form improved considering since the turn of the year, as he scored seven goals in as many appearances in the first seven matches of 2016, including the winners against Sheffield United and Liverpool.

However, he has been left out of the squad for Thursday’s trip to Denmark, where United face Midtjylland in the first leg of the Europa League round of 32 and Louis Van Gaal did not offer a timeframe for Rooney’s recovery.

“We have 13 players injured and Wayne is one of them,” the United manager said.

“You can never say [how long he could be out for]. He has a knee problem so we have to wait and see. He scores a lot of goals so he is very important for us. We know that but we have to cope with that.”
