United seal £15m signing

Spain-v-Netherlands-Group-B-2014-FIFA-World-Cup-BrazilManchester United have agreed a fee for the signing of Ajax utility man Daley Blind, who will join United in the coming days for a fee of £15m.

Blind becomes United’s fifth signing of the summer after Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Angel Di Maria and will join Holland team-mate Robin Van Persie at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old is a defensive midfielder by trade but can also play at left-back – a role he’s successfully occupied at club level – as well as left wing-back in a 3-5-2 formation, a position in which Van Gaal deployed him during the World Cup.

With United having already signed Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw, Blind would probably be utilised in midfield, given Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera are out injured and none of the other options at Van Gaal’s disposal have convinced the United manager.

Blind’s versatility is widely regarded to be the main reason behind Van Gaal’s decision to sign him, though he might not be United’s last signing this summer.
