Some links to get you through the day:

1. Ferguson is in a row with Foster, apparently. No quotes to back it up, but it’s quite possible Ferguson might have been annoyed with the way Kenwyne Jones’ goal was conceded. He was angry at many things following the Sunderland game, he would have picked a fight with a priest. I’m sure hot words may have been exchanged, but ‘bust-ups’, ‘row’ etc are not the exact kind of words here.

2. Meanwhile, some over the top guff from the union of referees, calling for Fergie to be ‘kicked out’ of management. Detailed commentary on this will follow in an upcoming post, but for now, just wallow in the ridiculousness of it all.

3. An article in the Mail, about Carrick’s return to the England fold; Capello has seemingly declared he will start either against Ukraine or Belarus.

@Johnsom33: TBH, I think Besty was probably hung over on the practice pitch.
It was an era when a lot of top players, shall we say, preferred to “play” rather than practice. Denis Law has a few stories to tell about all this.
Although not uncommon at that time, Besty did eventually go over the top here, and clearly shortened his career (and life 😥 ).

But from someone that saw him play for quite a few years, believe me, he was so, so, good, I just forget all this side chatter and just try to remember the greatness of this footballer!

@Redrich: Thanks for the updates. I was embarrassed on behalf of football that the US did not show the game on ANY channel. A world cup clinching game and no coverage????? What is wrong with them? Is college football bigger than soccer? I think so. 😥

@Anders: Yes, Isaksson was garbage and the game was very close. I found the game very close with both teams having good chances. I am just happy to be able to follow my national team in a world cup again.

@[OPTI]Madschester United: Just to clarify, I’m English, but my Family and close friends are American.
Happy to have all party’s become interested in next year’s finals. 🙂

But thanks for the thought mate.

@Redrich: We can’t blame fans. I’ve seen the blogosphere/twitterverse livid with the mainstream media for their indifference. Today most of them watched it for free through online streams. And that says a lot about missed a opportunity for the broadcasters.

I saw the second half, and it was quite exciting. Honduras have themselves to blame blowing chance after chance. But congratulations to USA.

@Red Ranter: Well you’re right, I can’t speak for the fans, but to degrade this game into what was basically an “underground” event, speaks volumes about the state of Soccer here.
When I just begin to think that it is taking a foothold, something like this occurs, and I feel we’re right back to “step #1”.

    I hate conservatism!! 🙂

@Redrich: TBH, “football-crazy” England were also not picked up by any English broadcaster today. Which itself is puzzling. 🙂

@Red Ranter: I don’t think you can compare the importance of one with the other. England had already qualified and it was an opportunity to measure the interest in online broadcasting.
The US game was critical to their qualification and would have provided a perfect nail-bitter for existing and budding fans to get their curious teeth into.

Instead, most people will wake tomorrow with no knowledge or care. And truly, that is why football, in this country, is soccer!!

@Grognard: I actually do think that Portugal, as a national team, has under performed because of an over-indulgence of individualism.
It’s a classic case of the sum of the parts not adding up to the whole!!

When you imagine that over the last few WC’s they’ve had names like, Figo, Costa, Ronaldo, Deco, Sinao, Carvalho, etc. (I’m sure I’m forgetiing a few), and you would certainly think that they could have achieved better things in the major competitions.
A Euro final appearence and a semi-final (gratis, England)in the WC is all that they have accomplished.
Similar in this respect is Spain, who have consistently under-achieved since the birth of man! 🙂 and will go hand in hand with their neighbors, down the yellow brick road of egotism, off to their own individual sunsets!! 🙂

With a whip hand, it’s possible to achieve a team goal, but frankly, I’m not sure these players give a shit!!

@Redrich: Notice how in all those names you mentioned, not one of them was a striker. I still feel they have underachieved primarily because they never had that go to go for goals in big tournaments. Nuno Gomez and Holger Postiga just don’t cut it mate. You cannot win a top tournament without one or two legit scoring threats up front. The country is obsessed with developing wingers and has too many of them meanwhile they have nothing up front. I do have to say the Brazilian they adopted Liedson, seems to have potential for me.

@Redrich: Isn’t he just the most irritating SOB on the planet? I hate it when he takes over the Fox Soccer Report from time to time with his 10 minute tirade known as “Maximum Soccer”. I wrote Fox Soccer Report and told Jeremy St. Louis himself that we in Canada especially really can’t stand the know nothingness of Max and his Maximum Bullshit. I was told that Fox Soccer Report which is out of Winnipeg Canada unfortunately has no power and has to bow down to Max and his verbal diarrhea due to contractual commitments with Fox. Man that muppet really gets on my nerves. He’s everything I detest about American soccer broadcasters. More concerned about their image and getting time to elevate themselves rather than the game. 🙄

@Grognard: They did have Pauleta, who had a very impressive scoring record both in France and for Portugal (47 goals in 88 internationals). But he failed to deliver when it really mattered.
