As the Wayne Rooney saga rumbles on, an unexpected twist could soon change the landscape of United’s business this summer and it could also go a long way in determining the outcome of the Premier League season.
Despite United’s stance that Rooney is not for sale at any price, the latest reports suggest that United might be ready to do business with Chelsea, but only if David Moyes can find a replacement for the England striker which, considering United’s fortunes in the transfer window so far this summer, is far from guaranteed.
Jose Mourinho has made clear that Chelsea are intentioned to make a third and final bid for the England striker, but Chelsea will only submit the offer – thought to be worth around £30m – after Monday night’s clash at Old Trafford, as Mourinho claimed that an earlier bid would be “unethical” as it would distract Rooney ahead of David Moyes’ first Premier League game at Old Trafford.
United have already turned down two offers from the West Londoners and have made clear that they do not intend to sell to a direct rival, however the Daily Mirror claims that United have contacted Chelsea to reveal their willingness to discuss a transfer involving Wayne Rooney.
The story, in truth, adds very little to what was already largely known, with David Moyes growing increasingly frustrated at having to discuss the England striker’s future on a daily basis, as media outlets continue to speculate over a possible move to Chelsea, while the United manager is busy trying to bolster his squad.
Even more ironically, the paper claims that United have already made their position known to Chelsea, which leads to question the accuracy of the story.
Whether United have spoken to Chelsea offering Jose Mourinho a glimmer of hope or not, it’s obvious that parting ways with Rooney without replacing him adequately would be a catastrophic deal for United, and not purely from a footballing perspective. Having adopted a resolute stance over the England striker, United would look foolish if they were to let Rooney go towards the end of the transfer window, particularly as they would strengthen a direct rival.
Similarly, were Rooney to leave without being replaced, David Moyes and the club would come under immense pressure and the club in particular would have to be held accountable for the failure to recruit a couple of major signings, as well as for allowing one of the club’s prized asset to leave.
Rooney is thought to be looking for an improved contract if he stays at Old Trafford, while United are keen to wait whether the striker deserves a pay rise on his £250,000-a-week-deal.
