‘United legend’, some Man United fans react after 28-year-old star signs new contract

A selection of Manchester United fans have praised goalkeeper David de Gea following his decision to sign a new and improved contract with the club.

The Spain international has been in a contract standoff with the Red Devils over the past 18 months but that came to an end this afternoon after the club confirmed that he has committed to a new long-term contract.

The former Atletico Madrid youngster has inked a fresh four-year deal with the Mancunian giants and his stay could be extended by a further 12 months through an extension clause which has been inserted.

Shortly after the contract announcement, a number of fans took to Twitter to share their views.

De Gea has looked far from his best form since the turn of the year and that has led to criticism from some of the club faithful, who have been used to seeing the Spaniard provide flawless performances between the sticks.

The contract saga may have partly hampered his performances on the playing field and it remains to be seen whether the 28-year-old can revive his old form, now that his future has been sorted with the club.

De Gea has kept two clean sheets from the opening five games of the new Premier League campaign and he will be hoping to add to the tally on Thursday night, should he get the nod for the Europa League group stage opener.

The Red Devils are scheduled to host Astana in the curtain-raiser of the European competition and it is unclear whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will stick with De Gea or play deputy Sergio Romero in goal.
