Transfer Rumours

United haven’t held talks for Vidal

rp_Arturo-Vidal-009-200x200.jpgDespite reports widely suggesting otherwise, Manchester United did not hold talks with Juventus for Arturo Vidal while negotiating Patrice Evra’s move to the Serie A champions.

United have been monitoring Vidal for months and, according to reports, they had even gone as far as approaching Juventus in spring to enquire about the Chilean midfielder, only to be told that Vidal would not leave Turin.

Over the last couple of weeks, however, reports in the Italian press intensified as United looked poised to table an official offer for the 27-year-old, but Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, an extremely reputable source in terms of transfers, yesterday claimed United did not hold talks with Juventus for the Chilean.

On his website, Di Marzio wrote that while United and Juventus have been in contact to negotiate Evra’s transfer to Italy, Vidal didn’t feature in the discussion between the two clubs even though, by finalising Evra’s move, United might have at least opened a line of communication with the Italian giants.

Reports on the Times, however, slightly contradict Di Marzio’s story by suggesting that United baulked at Juventus’ demand of £36m for the Chilean. With Arsenal signing Alexis Sanchez and Chelsea’s spending spree well underway, United surely can’t afford to try to negotiate a deal for a player of Vidal’s calibre, particularly considering that the club forked out £37m for Juan Mata in January, a wonderful player but not the sort of player who could fill United’s gaping hole in midfield.
