United defender set for exit

Crystal-Palace-v-Manchester-United-Premier-League (1)Jonny Evans looks set to move to Everton this summer, as Louis Van Gaal continues to offload players he deems to be surplus to requirements.

Having decided against signing Radamel Falcao on a permanent basis, the United manager has sanctioned the sale of Nani and Robin Van Persie – though a fee for the Dutchman remains to be agreed – to Fenerbache, while Tom Cleverley has left the club on a free.

Evans, who has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford and endured a torrid campaign last season, as poor performances, injuries and a six-game ban limited his first team chances, could move to Everton for about £7m.

The Northern Ireland international made only 17 appearances last season and with Van Gaal determined to bring in a new centre-back, the writing appears to be on the wall for the 27-year-old.

According to the Daily Mirror, United want £10m for the defender but, given Evans has only 12 months left on his contract, they are likely to have to reach a compromise with the Merseysiders.

Once hailed as the future of United’s defence, Evans has regressed enormously over the last two seasons and might well find his level at Everton but United can’t afford to carry passengers this season.
