Manchester United have been dealt a serious injury blow after Michael Carrick was stretchered off the pitch just before the end of England’s friendly against Spain.
The United midfielder appeared to turn his ankle and could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after England manager Roy Hodgson hinted he might have suffered ligament damage.
“It doesn’t look good,” Hodgson said.
“He’s got a severely twisted ankle, which normally means ligament damage. But we wont know until the X-ray or scan tomorrow.”
Carrick had started United’s last three games in all competitions and Louis Van Gaal will hope to have the midfielder available again soon, as his side face Watford away on Saturday and then host PSV Eindhoven at home three days later in the Champions League.
