Manchester United are close to secure their second signing of the summer, with Southampton’s midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin edging closer to a move to Old Trafford.
The Frenchman has been on United’s radar for a while now and, according to the Mirror, they have won the race to the Southampton midfielder and could announce the £24m deal as early as next week.
The 25-year-old has attracted interest from Arsenal and Tottenham, but with the former pulling out of the race because of the emergence of Francis Coquelin and the latter unable to offer Schneiderlin Champions League football, United are in pole position to clinch the deal.
On Wednesday, the Frenchman, who had wanted to join Arsenal 12 months before Southampton opposed the move, said he hoped his future would be sorted by next week, when the Saints are due to begin their pre-season.
Earlier this month, Schneiderlin had publicly stated he intended to leave the south coast to make the step to a club playing in the upper echelon of the Premier League and in the Champions League.
The holding midfielder, who joined from Strasbourg in 2008, has developed into one of the best midfielder in the Premier League, as he helped Southampton to earn a Europa League spot last season.
A good passer of the ball and excellent at reading the game, the France international was an integral cog in Ronald Koeman’s machine and his qualities make him a perfect signing for United, with Louis Van Gaal looking to bolster his midfield options given United’s over-reliance on Michael Carrick.
