United clinch Depay signing

Memphis Depay of PSV during the Dutch Eredivisie match between PSV Eindhoven and Nac Breda at the PhManchester United have reached a deal to sign PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay for £25m.

On Thursday morning, a number of journalists reported that the 21-year-old had told his team-mates he would be joining Louis Van Gaal at Old Trafford next season.

The club have since confirmed the arrival of the Dutchman, subject to a medical, which makes the soon-to-be former PSV Eindhoven man the first signing ahead of next season.

United had been linked with a move for Depay, who has scored 27 goals in 38 games in all competitions this season,  for a couple of months and look to have seen off the challenge of Liverpool and PSG, who were also tracking the Holland international.

PSV confirmed the transfer with a short statement on their website.

“PSV and Manchester United have reached an agreement on the transfer of Memphis,” the Dutch club said.

“Memphis has also reached an agreement with Manchester United.

“Marcel Brands [PSV Eindhoven’s sporting director] emphasised that all the necessary paperwork must first be dealt with in the coming days and that the player must undergo a medical examination.”

Brands said the deal arrived with “huge momentum” and that PSV were very proud of the agreement.

“We are very proud of this upcoming transfer, which came in a huge momentum,” he said.

“Memphis has gone through all the teams of the PSV youth academy and has played an important part in the national title this year.

“He’s a wonderful exponent of our training and will make a nice transition to a magnificent club in a beautiful competition. We obviously lose a fantastic player, which is of great value to the team.”
