United and Mourinho agree pre-contract deal

jose-mourinhoJose Mourinho has reportedly signed a pre-contract with Manchester United and could be in line for a hefty compensation if he’s not secured a permanent deal by 1 June.

According to Spanish newspaper El Pais, a source close to Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes has confirmed that the former Chelsea boss signed an agreement with United last month, although the club have made clear it retains the right to change their mind.

“If United do not sign the final contract [with Mourinho] before 1 May, they must pay £5m; if by 1 June he’s still not signed, they shall pay another £10m,” reads the report. “May is the key, because it’s the month in which the vast majority of the signings of players are closed and the plans formed.”

The newspaper added that the clause has been inserted in the pre-contract agreement as Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton remain unsure as to whether the Portuguese is the right man for the club.

However, as reported by Sport Witness, the article is written by Diego Torres, a very well respected journalist in Spain but also the author of a very critical Mourinho biography. The book was very badly received by Mourinho’s camp, particularly as Torres mentioned the Portuguese cried when he was told United had opted to replace Ferguson with David Moyes and, as such, is hard to believe Mendes would encourage some of his staff to leak information to Torres.
