Unbalanced United have a real problem

878b3230-5897-11e4-980e-f91b0663b4ba_457552682Marouane Fellaini has admitted that Manchester United are struggling to find the right balance between attacking flair and protecting their incredibly shaky defence.

The Belgian international finally his United account in after coming off the bench against West Brom on Monday night,  some 14 months after joining United and admitted he “had to wait a long time for this moment”. Despite Fellaini’s effort, however, United could only settle for a 2-2 draw, despite dominating possession and having more shots on target than West Brom and the Belgian feels the side lacks balance.

“We know we have a problem with the balance between defence and attack, but we train all day to try and make it better,” said Fellaini.

“We offered too much space in defence (against West Brom) but next week is a big game and we have to learn to focus for the whole game. I am determined to get things right – that is why we play football.

“I don’t think it was a good result for us (on Monday) because the next two games will be difficult.”

Fellaini was a surprise half-time substitution against West Brom, but his introduction revitalised United, as the Belgian netted the equaliser.

“The manager asked me to put pressure on the box and to keep fighting – I did that and I managed to score,” the Belgian said.

“It was a good feeling – I have waited a long time to score my first goal for Manchester United and I hope to score more.”

After arriving to Old Trafford on deadline day in the summer of 2013 for £27m, Fellaini has struggled with injuries and poor performances and is yet to show the form that he showed during his five-year spell at Everton, but the Belgian remains confident he has put his problems behind him.

“It was very difficult but I work hard every day, and when I am 100 per cent fit, I know I can be dangerous,” he said.

“Football can have its bad moments, and that was one. But I am happy here and the manager has shown trust in me.”
