Two Manchester City players test COVID-19 positive ahead of Manchester United clash

The woes for Manchester City increased early morning on Wednesday when it was revealed that three more personnel tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester United.

The latest list of positive results included goalkeeper Scott Carson who is on loan from Derby County, 18-year-old midfielder Cole Palmer and an unnamed staff member.

In a press release on their website, City announced that the three members of the club will now be self-isolating.

“Manchester City FC can confirm that Scott Carson, Cole Palmer and one member of staff have tested positive for COVID-19,” the club statement read.

“Both personnel will now observe a period of self-isolation in accordance with Premier League and UK Government protocol on quarantine.

“Everyone at the club wishes Scott, Cole and all of our other colleagues a speedy recovery ahead of their return to work, training and competition.”

Carson’s positive test is a big blow to City as the club’s regular goalkeeper Ederson is already in isolation, and it would leave them short of options in that position.

At least six players had missed City’s clash against Chelsea on Sunday due to the COVID-19 outbreak at the club and Guardiola, in interaction with Sky Sports on Tuesday, had admitted that he does not have enough players for the United game.

“We don’t have many players,” Guardiola said. “To play one, two games is okay but if sustained for a long time – and you can use just 14 or 15 players – it will be more difficult.

“But like everyone in the world, we have to adjust in our lives and our profession as much as possible. We don’t have an alternative.”
