Two down, how many left? United reject Rooney bid

Zemanta Related Posts ThumbnailManchester United have rejected a bid from Chelsea for Wayne Rooney, the second time within a matter of weeks that United have refused an offer for their wantaway striker by Roman Abramovich’s club.

United have repeatedly stated publicly that Rooney is not for sale, however the 27-year-old has been repeatedly linked with a move away from Old Trafford in what has developed into the most tedious transfer saga of the summer, and arguably of the last few summers.

An official United source told Press Association Sport: “A bid was received yesterday and immediately rejected. Our position remains that he is not for sale.”

Chelsea’s second bid was thought to be in the £25m region with £5m in add-ons, but the sum hasn’t proved tempting enough for David Moyes who has often reiterated his intention to keep the former Everton striker at the club this season, despite making clear that Rooney can not expect an automatic starting spot.

As far as transfers are concerned, United have been stranded in no man’s land throughout the summer, with their failure to land a significant signing becoming increasingly worrying for the fans, while there’s been little business on the departure front as well, with United now facing the last three, crucial, weeks of the transfer window with more doubts than certainties.

Many have maintained that Rooney would be allowed to leave only if United had a world class signing lined up, a process which, given United’s stubborn refusal to part ways with their number 10, seems to exclude any big name arrivals at least for the foreseeable future.

On the other hand, despite Jose Mourinho’s open admiration for Wayne Rooney, one has to wonder how far are Chelsea and the Portuguese manager prepared to go to land their man. Will they consider another, improved, offer or will they turn their head somewhere else, thus leaving United with a seemingly unhappy player in their ranks?

Thankfully, in less than a month, we’ll know the answer.
