Social media giant Twitter landed in hot water recently for posting a tweet mocking Manchester United Footballer Phil Jones in an unexpected turn of events.
A tweet posted on Twitter’s official account on Tuesday night read ‘Name a better footballer than Phil Jones’ and quickly received hundreds of retweets and likes.
This incident quickly came to the light of Manchester United officials who in turn complained to Twitter about the mocking tweet, with Jones and the club receiving an apology, while the tweet was subsequently deleted.
The club received an official apology from the Social media site, which said: “Our aim was to showcase our new product feature, conversation controls, which allows you to select who can reply to a Tweet.
“It was not our intention to cause upset and once we realised our mistake, we immediately deleted the Tweet.”
Twitter was on this occasion guilty of breaking its own rules on Bullying and harassment which state: “You may not engage in the targeted harassment of someone, or incite other people to do so.”
This tweet comes at a time of professional difficulties for the United star who has endured yet another tough campaign this season. The 28-year-old made the last of his eight appearances in January’s FA Cup fourth-round win at Tranmere.
