Manchester United suffered a humiliating 3-0 loss to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Red Devils had a good start to the derby at Old Trafford, but the momentum completely shifted in Liverpool’s favour following Casemiro’s error in the 35th minute.
The Brazilian gifted possession to the visitors and they took the lead. Mohamed Salah provided a perfect cross for Luis Diaz, who had a free header at the far post.
Another Casemiro error led to the second United goal before the interval. Salah and Diaz combined yet again to pile more misery on the former Real Madrid star.
United manager Erik ten Hag made the decision to replace him with Toby Collyer at the break. The 20-year-old had a relatively good Premier League debut.
He was up for the fight, winning all seven of his duels. The youngster also won three out of four tackles and induced two fouls from the visitors.
Liverpool won the game 3-0 after capitalising on a Kobbie Mainoo error, but Collyer should hold his head up high after impressing in an unexpected league debut.
Manuel Ugarte will be United’s go-to man in the number six role, but Collyer made a reasonable impression with his performance against Arne Slot’s side.
He has shown that he has the credentials to deputise for Ugarte. His showing could lead to possible questions about Casemiro’s future at United.
The 32-year-old had a relatively good pre-season, but his inconsistency has been visible in the new campaign.
United can ill afford high-profile errors and may look to part ways with the midfielder in January.
