Time for Scott McTominay to step up as Mason Mount set for spell on the sidelines

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed a fresh injury setback for Mason Mount.

The Athletic reported that the England international could be out for a month after suffering a calf injury.

Speaking ahead of the upcoming Premier League clash with Everton on Sunday, Ten Hag told club media (via ManUtd.com): “Mason picked up an issue, so we have to assess if he’s available for the game or not.”

Many people hoped Mount to hit the ground running when he switched from Chelsea to Man Utd last summer.

However, the 24-year-old has featured just 12 times for the Red Devils, recording a solitary assist.

Scott McTominay’s importance increases with Mount sidelined

Ten Hag must feel unlucky and annoyed with injuries this season.

Mount is a recent casualty. Christian Eriksen and Casemiro have also been on the sidelines.

This leaves the Dutchman with Sofyan Amrabat, Hannibal Mejbri, Scott McTominay,= and Bruno Fernandes as the only first-team midfielders available.

Kobbie Mainoo is a promising talent, but he has yet to feature this season after suffering an injury in the pre-season tour to the United States.

We believe McTominay has a massive role to play in the upcoming weeks.

Man Utd face a demanding schedule with three consecutive away games, including a must-win trip to Galatasaray. They will then host Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Mount’s injury opens the door for McTominay to occupy the number eight spot.

The €25 million star has been an inspiring figure for Scotland, scoring seven goals in eight games in the 2024 European Championship qualifiers.

McTominay must replicate the same level of performance for Man United.

He has been a fine progressive ball carrier for the Red Devils but needs to improve his ball distribution.

He is good at making late runs inside the box. However, Ten Hag will demand more quality on the ball from his midfielder.

Apart from McTominay, recent injuries could also open a door of opportunity for Mainoo.

The 18-year-old has featured three times for England’s Under-19s during the international break.

United fans may see the Academy star get some minutes against Everton.
