Transfer Rumours

Tier 1 journalist denies Manchester United links with 22-year-old English center-back

Manchester United have now less than a week to grab something positive out of the current summer transfer window.

They have made only one signing so far in Donny van de Beek, and this has reportedly been a reason of frustration amongst the United fans

In the middle of the chaos, Laurie Whitwell, a reputed England-based Manchester United correspondent for The Athletic, has denied the talks of United being interested in attaining the services for Norwich defender Ben Godfrey.

The 22-year-old was a pivotal part of the Norwich team that suffered relegation last term.

Godfrey is a real talent, and he deserves to be in the Premier League this season as well. The Englishman has racked up interest from Newcastle United, Everton, and several other top tier clubs.

While Newcastle have only made inquiries about his availability, Everton have reportedly submitted a bid of £20 million-plus £5 million. However, that will be rejected soon by Norwich who values their defender at £30 million, as per Whitwell.

Manchester United are in need of a center-back, especially after the potential departure of Chris Smalling.

Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo haven’t proved their mettle under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, and Harry Maguire remain the only experienced defenders, with Teden Mengi and Axel Tuanzebe providing an extra layer of youthfulness in the defensive department.

United are willing to make a defensive acquisition during the latter stage of the transfer market. But there is a high probability that it would be a move for not a center-back but a left-back.
