Three midfielders Man Utd could sign this summer including £40m Wolves star

Manchester United could sign a new midfielder during the transfer window.

The Red Devils have primarily focused on bolstering the frontline this summer.

They have so far signed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo alongside left wing-back Diego Leon, who finalised his move at the turn of the year.

A midfielder is also one of the priorities for Man United. Let’s look at three possible names the Red Devils could seek to sign in the next few weeks.

Morten Hjulmand – Sporting CP

Manager Ruben Amorim played a key part in bringing Hjulmand to Sporting CP from Lecce in the summer of 2023. The Dane had a superb debut season and was promoted as the club captain last term.

The 26-year-old is a defensive midfielder by trade with fine all-round attributes. He had a passing accuracy of 91 percent in the Primeira Liga last season, winning 62 percent of his duels.

Hjulmand also made 5.7 recoveries and 1.9 tackles per outing and controlled proceedings in the centre of the park. He may need little time to adapt, having already played under Amorim’s tutelage.

The midfielder is reportedly pushing for an exit, but Sporting CP want at least £44 million for his sale. We won’t be surprised if United meet the valuation during the final phase of the transfer window.

Ederson – Atalanta

The Brazil international has been a long-term target for the Mancunian giants. The £44 million-rated star was on the club’s radar in the summer of 2024, but they could not secure an agreement with Atalanta.

The club ultimately signed Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain, who has yet to find his peak form. The Uruguayan has the chance to redeem himself this campaign, but still needs a strong competitor.

With Casemiro no longer in his prime, his compatriot Ederson could be pursued. The 26-year-old has similar strengths to Hjulmand. He has excelled with his distribution, recoveries, tackling and duel-winning ability.

He also provides an attacking outlet from midfield. Ederson can operate as a holding or central midfielder and can make late runs into the box. He managed seven goal contributions for Atalanta last term.

Andre – Wolverhampton Wanderers

United have already signed two players in Cunha and Mbeumo, who have vast Premier League experience. The duo netted 35 league goals alongside 14 assists last season, and should help the club finish in the European places.

If the Red Devils follow the same trend, they could consider a new midfielder with league experience. The club are reportedly keen on landing Wolves’ Andre, whose performances went under the radar during his debut campaign in 2024/25.

The 24-year-old completed 93 percent of his passes in the English top-flight with 5.8 recoveries and 2.8 tackles per outing. He also won almost 60 percent of his duels and lost possession on only 4.8 occasions per game at the Midlands club.

His performances was outstanding despite Wolves’ disappointing campaign. Vitor Pereira’s side are open to selling their prized assets at the right price, and a package of around £40m could be sufficient to prise him away before the deadline.
