Three Champions League midfielders United could sign this summer

Manchester United ended their six-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup last month and they still have a realistic chance of winning more silverware this term.

Manager Erik ten Hag has done a tremendous job since his appointment last summer and he is likely to be backed with more funds to bolster the squad ahead of next season.

A marquee striker is obviously the prime priority for the Red Devils boss but the Dutchman may also seek another young central midfielder with big-game experience.

Here are three Champions League midfielders that United could sign this summer.

Jude Bellingham – Borussia Dortmund

The Englishman was on the Red Devils radar as a 16-year-old but he opted to join Dortmund from Birmingham City instead. He has since developed into a top-class box-to-box midfielder.

The teenager has scored 10 goals and provided six assists for Dortmund this term but he has also excelled defensively with a stunning nine duels and 2.6 tackles won per game.

At just 19, he is on the radar of several elite clubs including Real Madrid and Liverpool. Dortmund value him at over £100 million and this could be a potential stumbling block for United.

With plans to bring in a marquee striker this summer, the club could look at a more affordable midfield option. Chelsea’s Mason Mount has been highlighted as a cheaper alternative.

Eduardo Camavinga – Real Madrid

Over the past few days, United have been linked with a big-money move for Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, who has yet to establish himself under manager Carlo Ancelotti.

The 20-year-old has produced several stand-out performances for Los Blancos since his arrival in 2021 but has failed to nail down a consistent starting role with the European champions.

Compared to Bellingham, Camavinga is more of a defensive-minded central midfielder but the Frenchman does his job exceptionally well. He has a passing accuracy of over 92 per cent.

With a reported price tag of around £115m, it seems unlikely that United will afford him on a permanent deal. They could propose a season-long loan with an obligation to buy if certain conditions are met.

Mason Mount – Chelsea

Compared to the above duo, Mount seems a more realistic target for United. The England star will enter the final 12 months of his Chelsea contract in July and he has yet to renew with them.

The 24-year-old has not been at his best this season with only nine goal contributions but he was terrific for Chelsea in the previous campaign with 13 goals and 16 assists in all competitions.

Mount is an attacking midfielder by trade but can also operate from the number eight role. With the defensive assurance of Casemiro alongside, he could have the freedom to express himself.

Chelsea are looking for a package of around £50m for his sale but United could prise him away for less. Like Marcus Rashford, Ten Hag could revive Mount’s form and confidence in our opinion.
