In August 2004, the great Alex Ferguson had announced the signing of an 18-year-old Wayne Rooney from Everton. As a teenager, Rooney had shown signs of brilliance at Goodison Park and after his star-making performance at Euro 2004 for England, he became a hot target for Manchester United.
Rooney made his debut for United in September 2004 in the UEFA Champions League match against Fenerbache in which he scored a hat-trick and added an assist to help United to a 6-2 win. The rest was history.
In his 13-year-old stint with Manchester United, Rooney rose to become one of the most prolific stars of the club, scoring 253 goals for the club in all competitions. He left a legacy of greatness at Old Trafford when he rejoined Everton in 2017 – a legacy that will now fall on the next generation to continue.
On Friday, Rooney, in a Twitter post announced that his 11-year-old son Kai has signed for Manchester United academy.
“Proud day. Kai signing for Man Utd [sic]. Keep up the hard work son,” Rooney wrote on Twitter along with a photo of himself along with his son Kai and wife Coleen.
“Special night….. congratulations Kai. I love you and I am so proud of you. Keep trying your best,” Coleen wrote in an Instagram post.
Rooney, who is currently the interim manager of Derby County, left United as the leading goal-scorer for the club with 253 goals in 559 games. In his 13 years at Old Trafford, he won five Premier League and one Champions League titles, along with several other major domestic and European trophies.
