Tahith Chong joined Werder Bremen on a one-year loan deal this summer in search of regular first-team football.
The 20-year-old winger is regarded as one of the most promising players to emerge from United’s academy for some time but has made just 16 appearances since breaking into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-team back in January 2019.
The loan move was a strategy on United’s part to ensure regular first-team football for its academy stars.
Chong says he’s is relishing the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Kevin de Bruyne and Serge Gnabry.
De Bruyne and Gnabry have gone on to bigger and better things after leaving Werder in recent years and their success stories have made the club an attractive destination for youngsters who want a clear pathway into first-team football. ‘
Chong spoke to Werder Bremen’s official website regarding the history of the players that have preceded him from the Premier League to the Bundesliga and had this to say about it –
“It’s definitely in the back of your head when you come here. The club’s history and reputation for helping players like Gnabry and De Bruyne advance their careers is always good to hear, so I’m sure this the right place to continue my development.”
Chong made his debut for Werder Bremen in a friendly against LASK, assisting one goal and being an attacking threat for the first half of the match.
Chong’s display is earning him comparisons to footballing superstars Leroy Sane and Jadon Sancho from some fans.
United hope that the loan move would help Chong develop his footballing skills, with Germany getting a reputation for developing youth prospects into world-class footballers in the past few years.
