Stats show the real culprits in Manchester United’s dismal performances this season

Andre Onana has been the target of huge criticism after his two glaring mistakes in Manchester United’s 3-3 draw at Galatasaray on Wednesday.

The match was crucial for the Red Devils to keep their Champions League aspirations alive.

But the Cameroon international’s failure to deal with two straightforward free-kicks led United to come away from Istanbul with one point instead of three.

Onana’s display against Galatasaray was unacceptable and scrutiny is definitely justified. But contrary to what some of the fans are suggesting, the 27-year-old is not the real culprit for Man United’s dismal performances this season.

Statistics show Onana is currently third for total saves in the Premier League and is joint-top for save percentage in England. He is also near the top in terms of clean sheet percentage.

The fact that Onana has made 51 saves proves he is not the reason United are struggling.

The lack of protection by the defence and midfield are the real culprits for the team’s performances.

The Cameroon international is not entirely blameless, as he has made several mistakes since arriving at Old Trafford in the summer from Inter Milan.

But the reason they are four points behind the top-four is cheaply conceding the ball to opponents.

Onana was disappointed with himself after the final whistle in Istanbul.

His confidence must have suffered a big blow, and he needs support from the fans rather than being attacked by them.
