Star using United link to extract contract extension?

Ilkay GundoganSome newspapers can’t help but have a field-day with the mind of United fans as they capitalise on United’s somewhat ‘quiet summer’ of squad strengthening by regurgitating the same old rubbish thus offering players and agents the opportunity to milk their current employers while callously tantalising fans that their favourite target is about to step off the plane in Manchester.

From Thiago to Fabregas via Ronaldo and Bale, rumours re-emerged yesterday that Arsenal ‘have joined United in the race’ to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan.

United are in the race for Gundogan? I must read on….!

However, when you read deeper it becomes evident that player, Father and probably agent are using the media to extract an almighty contract extension.

According to the Daily Express, Arsenal are prepared to spend up to £20m to land the Manchester United target who helped Dortmund reach the Champions League final last season.

Having lost Gotze this summer and now accommodating a rather annoyed Robert Lewandowski for the season, Dortmund are highly unlikely to part with one of their remaining crown jewels to any club for any figure, certainly not one as derisory as £20m for arguably the star of last seasons Champions League.

Apparently, the 22-year-old has been identified by both United boss David Moyes and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger as an ideal Premier League midfielder. Where they got this from is unknown, perhaps both Moyes and Wenger met for dinner WITH said Journalist and discussed the merits of Gundogan.

Really? I knew it was too good to be true…..!

The report claims Gundogan’s father has cast major doubt on any potential deal, insisting that his son wants to stay in the Bundesliga.

Speaking to German publication Kicker, he said: “I am keen to ensure he [Ilkay] remains with Borussia Dortmund.

“He is doing fine so it’s a bit early to move to a club in England or Spain at this point in time.”

And he even suggested the all-action midfielder could put pen to paper on a new long-term Dortmund contract.

“Borussia Dortmund will be coming up with an offer of a new contract soon,” he continued.

“We will be able to oversee things much better than.”

The midfielder’s current deal expires in the summer of 2015, and Dortmund are keen to prevent a repeat of the Robert Lewandowski situation.

We’re well aware at RedRants how popular the addition of Gundogan would be amongst RedRanters but please, don’t get your hopes up, there’s zero chance of him leaving Dortmund any time soon. (tempts fate!)

Or is there?
