Manchester United’s dire proportion at the back might force them to sign some defenders in the summer of 2021.
According to the claims made by Daily Star, the English heavyweights are looking to bolster their defensive department with the acquisitions of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid and Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig next summer.
The Manchester-based club came close to securing a deal for Varane when Jose Mourinho was at the helm in 2016; the Frenchman chose not to leave the Spanish capital then.
Dayot Upamecano has been on the radar of United for years now, with Solskjaer and his management believingly being a huge admirer of the 21-year-old.
Raphael Varane‘s contract at Manchester United is set to expire in 2022, and the talks over an extension haven’t gone well, signifying that he could be an option to leave Santiago Bernabeu next summer.
Upamecano signed his contract renewal with the German club last July, extending his stay at the club until 2023.
However, his contract reportedly has a release clause of £36m, which could be triggered by any club next summer. United could utilise the opportunity to strike down a deal for one of their long-term targets.
The Red Devils have kept the second-worst defensive record, having conceded 11 goals from only three matches.
If the back-line keeps leaking goals after goals, adding some big names to the roster would be the only way of salvation for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
